This is a review of the book The Awakening which was written by Kate Chopin and first published in 1899.
The novel is set in New Orleans on the Louisiana Gulf coast at the end of the 19th century.
The main character is a women called Edna Pontellier. Edna is trying to find herself in a time when women were either mothers or wives but Edna wants her own identity. There are many different and interesting characters within the book who all have different opinions on Edna’s awakening.
When the book was first published in 1899 it was extremely controversial and became censored and branded as “immoral” due to the fact that the book promotes freedom for women to choose how they live their lives.
I have done a video review and discussion of this book that you can watch down below.
Thank you for reading and I'll speak to you soon!
